For who?

As the description at the top of this Online Flea Market site says, we offer free advertising to South Africans who usually sell their products at a flea market or arts and crafts market, or from home. If you’re selling fairly unique or handmade products, even if already selling these products from a website, gain further exposure for your work and handicrafts here on Online Flea Market. For free.

If you’re trying to sell something fairly unique and arty farty that you regularly make from home, at a flea market, or on a website, then read on (you can also simply leave a comment on any of the category pages, with your contact details, but won’t be able to include any images, and we also feel that a separate lengthier page might gain your business more exposure than just a short comment might, but it’s up to you):

This site is brand new, as we write this (6 July 2010), but what we’re hoping that this site can become is a place crafty artsy South African folk can come to, to either browse through what’s on offer, and contact the advertiser, or to advertise their craft or flea market items for free. South Africans supporting each other.

If you have a business, no matter how small, in East London, South Africa, you might also want to advertise for free on our East London in SA site.

What do you get for advertising on Online Flea Market for free?

A page to yourself, of minimum 150 words and maximum 1 000 words

Extra words allowed are for your contact details -
you might want to include:
a website link;
a phone number;
an email address;
your name

In your actual 150 to 1 000 word description, you should always remember to at least include the area you are in, as this may help flea market browsers want to contact you (they may be thinking about if they can come see the products in person, or that it won’t cost too much for possible posting of the products or for a courier service.)

If you really do sell your products only mostly at flea markets or arts and crafts stalls, do tell the readers at which flea markets to find you, on which days.

Obviously a title for your flea market “stand” is also not part of the maximum 1 000 words allowed.

We may edit your title a bit, and may also slightly edit your 150 to 1 000 word description.
We are also web designers and writers and have a little experience with basic SEO (Search Engine Optimization) techniques, and will apply what we know to a title and description, to perhaps help your page get found more easily when people are searching for something along the lines of what you are advertising.

You can also include up to 3 images in your ad. (eg 3 photos, or 2 photos and a logo.)

We will also place your ad title in a category, sometimes two – a page that will list all titles of ads in that category, and link to them. We MAY create a new category if there are none that suit your product.

This is a free service, and in return we expect some things from you:

Family friendly content and images only; if we’re going to be linking to your site, your site must also contain only family friendly content and images.

We reserve the right to refuse posting your ad for whatever reason, and also reserve the right to stop adding new ads should we so decide to (Please understand that while you’re getting an ad placed for nothing, we’re paying for the hosting of the site.) We may also decide to remove an ad for whatever reason.

Only two small alteration requests per year can be made, so be wary of including prices that change often. If requesting an alteration, be sure to email us the exact wording, instead of just telling us what you would like changed. Retype the old wording and say something like “please replace with this:” (and then type the new wording).

We do not do special formatting – No columns, tables or anything fancy. Just plain text.

Your actual ad content should be a minimum of 150 words, and a maximum of 1 000 words.

Please do not merely copy and paste an existing online ad of yours, as unique content has a better chance of being found on the Internet. At least try to change a few words or rearrange sentences etc.

Your three images allowed should not be more than 250kb each, and the longest side should not be more than 500 pixels. Please send images in jpeg format, and correctly sized.

We also ask that you don’t mind adverts appearing on the same page as your content (usually mostly off to the right, neatly, in a separate column, or at the very top or bottom of each page.) We may also include some paid ad space banners or ads at a later stage, on this site, probably mostly at the top of the category pages.

We also ask that you don’t mind if we take more than just one or two days before your ad is up on our site, as it’s just two of us working from home, this is a free service for South Africans, and we have other work to do too.

Please try and make sure that your product is fairly unique and crafty, as we would like to offer viewers a wide variety of products and not many of the same or very similar item. We may refuse to accept your free ad submission if there are already too many similar items displayed on Online Flea Market – a good reason to hurry and get in early!

Why is this free? How do we benefit?

More people will see our ads and links to our other sites, and, at a later stage, our ad space to rent banners.
